Lithium iron phosphate: the chemistry of almost the whole catalogue. Cobalt-free, it lasts more cycles than the other lithium chemistries, but does not charge below zero.
What changes for you
How long it lasts depends more on how you use it than on what is inside. The datasheet for the EVE LF280K cell declares 6,000 cycles at a remaining capacity of at least 80%, at 25 °C and half power; the Victron camper battery, which uses LFP cells, declares 2,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge and 5,000 at 50%. The Sandia lab of the US Department of Energy measured between 2,500 and 9,000 equivalent cycles on the same LFP cells simply by changing temperature, depth of discharge and current. Cold is a charging problem, not a discharging one. The EVE cell charges from 0 °C up and the Victron battery from +5 °C; both discharge down to −20 °C, but at −20 °C the 200 Ah Victron delivers only 100. For winter camper use there are two routes: an internal heater, which draws on the battery's own energy, or a different chemistry, sodium-ion or LTO.
The warranty ends on the first of three limits to trigger: years, cycles or energy throughput. Berlin's HTW read the German warranty contracts of 2026: from 3,500 to 10,000 guaranteed cycles, guaranteed remaining capacity between 60% and 85%, energy caps from 2.4 to 8.5 MWh per kWh installed. A home system does 150–300 equivalent cycles a year: "6,000 cycles" and "10 years" are two promises that, at that rate, never meet.

The cathode is lithium iron phosphate, the anode graphite, the nominal voltage 3.2 V per cell. It contains no cobalt or nickel: the European Commission's JRC calls it "relatively safe" and "of low value for recycling", because the metals worth recovering are not there.
On safety the sources agree on the intensity, not on the threshold. In the calorimeter at KIT Karlsruhe, LFP and NMC cells begin self-heating at the same temperature, around 90 °C. What changes is what comes after: LFP reaches 259 °C at 3 °C per minute and never enters thermal runaway; NMC reaches 731 °C at 7,577 °C per minute and releases three times the heat. The "onset temperatures" you read around, from 90 to 270 °C for the same chemistry, measure different things with different methods: whoever quotes a single number, without saying which, is not saying anything.
In Europe it is the chemistry of almost all residential storage (BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS, sonnenBatterie 10, Pylontech US5000), of balcony storage (Zendure SolarFlow AB2000, which charges at −20 °C thanks to a self-heating film) and of portable power stations, as well as Victron's camper batteries. From 18 February 2027 the digital passport required by EU regulation 2023/1542 will record the chemistry, the expected cycles and the test used to measure them on every battery above 2 kWh: the same fields this entry uses.
